The Fullness of His Grace
When you’re in the midst of a struggle – whether tragedy, sickness, betrayal, or hardship – human nature wants to look at the problem and do what’s natural: worry, fret, or get even. But God gives another option: trust in Him. When you do, you will receive His peace – His perfect peace for the very moment you’re in. He knows all that you’re facing, and, even with chaos ensuing on the outside, you can walk in the fullness of His grace and peace on the inside. What will you trust Him with today?
I will both lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, LORD, make me live in safety. (Psalm 4:8)
Since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:1)
The LORD gives strength to His people; the LORD blesses His people with peace. (Psalm 29:11 NIV)
He will keep in perfect peace all those who trust in Him, whose thoughts turn often to the Lord! (Isaiah 26:3 TLB)
Father, thank You for Your promise to bless us with Your true and lasting peace, no matter what we’re facing. Amen.

As many of you will now be aware, during the holidays Mrs Melissa Emmett accepted a position as Year 6 Teacher at Playford College effective from the start of this term.
Mel has served faithfully at Good Shepherd since July 2017 and has been a blessing to many children and families during that time. I know that she will continue to be a blessing in her new role. Mel is returning to Good Shepherd on Friday 31st July to be formally acknowledged for her contribution to the school and farewelled after Chapel. We would like any parents who are available on Friday to attend this event. This will also give Mel an opportunity to properly say goodbye to her old class.
Mrs Jennifer Grieger has been appointed to teach the Foundation class until the end of this year. Jennifer is an experienced teacher having taught a variety of year levels since 2007 (including Foundation), initially in Victoria and now in South Australia. Jennifer lives with her family in Angaston and is looking forward to getting to know the school community. I know you will join with me in making her feel very welcome at Good Shepherd.
Staff were very busy during the July PD week engaging in various professional learning activities. These included First Aid training, Valuing Safe Communities workshop, Connect (focusing on a Lutheran understanding of spirituality and the important role of grace and relationships in our schools), team planning and preparation for the International Baccalaureate ‘self-study’ which leads up to our school’s evaluation in 2021. There was also time for reflection after such a different first semester as well as collegiality during the annual staff (children, pets) breakfast at my place.
With some COVID–19 restrictions easing we are able to have parents entering the school again and attending events such as Assembly and Chapel. We are required to keep a record and contact details of anyone entering the school for any prolonged period (such as attending Assembly and Chapel). As there are multiple entrances to the school these forms will be located by the front office, the entrance to the Hub and in each of the classroom. You are only required to fill out the form once each day. Parents do not have to complete a COVID–19 declaration form for short visits such as drop off/pick up. Everyone is required to abide by social distancing and hygiene requirements whilst on site.
Many families have asked what’s happening with the canteen now that some restrictions have eased. I have met with our volunteer canteen manager, Jaymee Klose and at this stage there are still too many additional requirements in place to make it practical. We are hoping it may be possible to recommence canteen from term four but, like many other things, it may look different including possibly a fortnightly service rather than weekly. Another reason we are keen to recommence in fourth term is this is Jaymee’s last year of coordinating canteen and she would like to have the opportunity to induct the new canteen manager. Classroom Snapshot – Ms Beames’ 1/2 Class
Hi everyone, at the beginning of the term, we began our inquiry into ‘How we Organise Ourselves.’ We have been looking at the importance of transport systems and the service they provide in our communities. To assist us in understanding the evolution of differnet types of transport, we just had to go to the National Motor Museum in Birdwood.
Our first experience at the Museum was a session about the ‘Hawker Van’ transport service. In the olden days, horse and cart were the main form of transport around, making travelling to the shops very difficult. Many men, of varying ethnicities, took this opportunity to become ‘Hawkers’ and travel around the place selling household items to the people on stations and farms away from the town.
In the session we were given some very serious gloves to put on. Then we were allowed to open up some model Hawker vans, take a look at the old artefacts inside and spruik our classmates about the things we would choose to sell if we had our own Hawker Van.
In the afternoon we were able to head off in our small groups to tour the museum. We saw so many different types of transport, from old motor bikes and racing cars, to fire engines and buses. We also really enjoyed exploring as we completed the learning activities, including: ‘Hunt for Junk,’ ‘Ford Model T Trail’ and ‘I Spy.’
A huge thank you goes to Mrs Abdelmalek, Mrs Harvey, Mrs Pech and Mrs Scanlon for their time and energy in guiding us around the museum and helping to keep us safe. We had an amazing day out on the first GSLS excursion since COVID-19. We had so much fun as a class and have learnt so much that will inform our inquiry from here. PYP News – Coming Soon… Student Led Conferences
On Wednesday 12th August we will be celebrating the students’ learning with Student Led Conferences (SLC). SLC are based around a Unit of Inquiry and show how it is transdisciplinary, by covering other areas such as Science, Maths, English, and Technology, set up as four stations in the classroom.
Student-led conferences offer authentic opportunities for students to share their learning with their parents/caregivers. They engage and motivate both students and parents to participate enthusiastically in the teaching-learning process. Student-led conferences strengthen the relationship between home and school and also bring students and parents closer together. Through preparation at school, students have the opportunity to confidently present their learning in a safe environment. This enables students to reflect on their personal learning journey, gaining greater awareness of the learning process and further progressing towards becoming lifelong learners. Their Learner Profile shine as students communicate their learning, are knowledgeable in the concepts they share, are risk takers to share what they have learnt and are respectful in the way they present and of the people around them.
SLC are a great opportunity for parents to spend one on one time with their child and focus on what they have been learning. From a teacher perspective, it is wonderful to see students confidently share their learning with enthusiasm and especially when parents walk away having learnt something themselves.
All classes are invited to share with their parents their learning in German, PE and the Arts as stations will be set up for them too.

Welcome back to term three, I trust you have had a good start.
This week’s insight is from Michael Gross an award winning speaker and author of many great books. He has had years of experience in parenting education. This weeks newsletter article is about ‘Developing leadership skills in your child’.
Developing leadership skills in your child
Your child has the potential to be a leader given the right circumstances and environment. The following five leadership skills have been observed in student leaders in Australian primary schools and can be promoted by parents at home.
Being a leader means that your child is willing to take responsibility and be accountable for their actions. Personal responsibility is shown when your child is accountable for their behaviour, for their belongings and for others. Practical ways to develop responsibility include:
- Giving them responsibility for part of their day
- Encouraging them to restore relationships with others when they mess up
- Taking responsibility for household chores
While most leadership positions require your child to speak publicly their communication skills can be developed through regular one-on-one or small group experiences at home and at school. Practical ways to develop your child’s communication skills include:
- One-on-one conversations with adults
- Regular discussions at the meal table
- Encourage your child to participate fully in speaking activities at school
Personal organisational skills and the ability to organise others are important for effective leadership. Practical ways to develop organisational skills include encouraging your child to:
- Keep their personal space tidy and organised
- Use a diary to help manage their time
- Organise a weekly chores roster including all members of the family
Cooperating, encouraging and accepting others are essential qualities of an effective leader. Practical ways to develop a sense of teamwork include:
- Play team games where children work together
- Encourage siblings to cook and do other chores together
- Focusing on your child’s contribution to a team or group rather than individual achievement
An underestimated quality shared by most admired leaders is their ability to remain calm when things don’t go well. This emotional intelligence skill requires self-awareness, an ability to recognise their emotions and respond appropriately to the emotions of others. You can nurture these skills in the following way:
- Help your child recognise their emotions
- Help your child recognise emotions in others
- Teach your child to shift their mood
Leaders are needed in all walks of life – at work, in school, in families, in sport and in the wider community. The skills of leadership are sewn in the first group that they belong to – their family. By encouraging your child to be a contributing member of their family you are also helping to develop leaderships skills they can practise outside their family.

International ICAS Assessments
Thank you to all families who have returned forms for these tests. The entries are now closed. The tests will occur from mid August until early September and I will be in touch if there are any further instructions that need to be given.
A huge thank you to the Good Shepherd community for rallying behind the Term 2 Book Fair. Our school hasn’t seen a higher grossing Book Fair and that is all because of the enthusiasm you brought to the event. It is greatly appreciated. Monies gained from the Book Fair for the school (via the Scholastic rewards system) has been going back into the library in the form of Graphic Novels and different book series.
Our next Book Fair is booked for Week 5, Term 4.
It’s been great to see students coming into the library to return their books via the return chute this week! The first couple of weeks back at school are always a bit hit and miss with returns but I have to applaud the students on their efforts. As I’m coming across overdues for each student I am mentioning this to them and asking them to have a look around at home, however, I will send home overdue notices in the next couple of weeks to help everyone out.
We are seeking a fun, energetic, food loving, people person to coordinate the management of our very popular school canteen. As our volunteer Canteen Manager you would look forward to providing nutritious recess and lunch options to over 100 students each Friday. This would involve menu selections, ordering of goods and working alongside our cheerful team of parent volunteers each Friday. No experience necessary as our current Canteen Manager would be on hand to show you the ropes during Term 4.

A big THANK YOU to Malcolm Scholz for making two trips to Adelaide and back with trailer loads of new shelving for us over the school holidays. Due to Malcolm’s generous donation of equipment, time and fuel we were able to make a huge saving on freight charges.
Due to current guidelines amid COVID-19 we are unable to share homemade baked goods with children at school. If you would like to bring in something to share with your child’s class it must be purchased from a store and be indivdual pre-packaged goods. Thank you for your understanding.
School fees for Term 3 will be sent out this week and are due by Friday 21 August 2020. Please contact Sarah Loveday if you do not receive a statement via email.
We are very mindful of the continuing economic impact that COVID-19 is having on many of our school families. Please be assured that we understand. We have directly contacted those families that we are aware of who are experiencing financial stress to offer support. If you are also finding this time financially challenging, and have not yet been contacted, please make it a priority to contact our Finance Officer, Sarah Loveday, for a confidential discussion about how we will support you.

There is a D&M’s coffee voucher up for grabs for the first person to correctly identify this past student at the Front Office (either in person or by phone).
